The Big Bird Race supports the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS). A global environment treaty, it aims to conserve and manage avian, marine and terrestrial migratory species, as well as their habitats throughout the range of their migration.

Since 2001, BirdLife International’s ‘Save the Albatross’ campaign has aimed to reduce the number of seabird deaths caused by the longlining fishing industry to a sustainable level, ensuring that relevant international agreements, such as ACAP, are implemented to benefit both birds and the legal fishing industry. This work is funded through the BirdFair and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), the BirdLife Partner in the UK.
