Day, McIlroy and Johnson miss cut as Matsuyama steals day two

For the first time since Golf introduced world rankings in 1986, none of the top three have made the cut at the a Major.

Jason Day crashed out on 10-over at Erin Hills in Wisconsin, while four birdies in the final six holes wasn’t enough to save Rory McIlroy.

The Northern Irishman carded one-under yesterday, but his 78 on Thursday ensured an early exit.

And world number one Dustin Johnson will also have a couple of free days to think about what went wrong.

DJ hovered around the cut mark throughout Friday, but three bogeys through 13 to 17 ended his hopes.

But while those three head home, we have a thrilling four-way lead at the top.

Englishmen Paul Casey and Tommy Fleetwood are joined on seven-under by American duo Brooks Koepka and Brian Harman.

Casey is 24/5 favourite to go on and win it on Sunday, with Koepka at 11/2.

Harman is 11/1 with Fleetwood 12/1.

First round leader Rickie Fowler endured a difficult day two, posting a 73.

But he heads into the weekend just one stroke off the lead, and our traders make him second favourite at 5/1 to claim his first Major.

The big mover however, and the one everyone will now have their eye on, is Hideki Matsuyama.

The 22-year-old enjoyed a superb Friday, waltzing through the course with a sensational 65.

It more than makes up for an opening-round 74, and the Japanese ace is now 15/2 to overhaul a two-shot deficit.

JB Holmes (12/1) and Jamie Lovemark (16/1) have posted successive 69s to join Fowler on six-under.

Masters champion Sergio Garcia, and two-time Major winner Martin Kaymer can’t be ruled out yet either.

The pair are only four off the pace, with Sergio 14/1 and Kaymer 28s.
