Many thought Liverpool were a shoo-in to retain the Premier League title last year after signing Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike, but that isn't how things turned out for Arne Slot and co.

The Reds failed to build upon their league win in the 2024/25 season and ended the campaign in fifth place. Although Slot did guide Liverpool to Champions League qualification, the board weren't impressed, and the Dutchman was sacked just a few days after the season concluded.

Best Premier League finish

Despite being the most decorated side in the history of English football, Liverpool have only won the Premier League twice, in 2020 and in 2025. A lot of the Reds' successes came in the 1970s and 80s, before the Premier League began.

The Reds suffered as a result of the sheer dominance of Pep Guardiola's Man City, finishing in second place in 2019 and 2022. In fact, until last season, Liverpool were the only side not named Man City to have won the Premier League since Chelsea in 2017.

Squad and key players

Liverpool's squad has undergone some major changes over the last few months, and it's expected to evolve even further by the time the transfer window slams shut at the beginning of September.

Since the end of last season, Liverpool have lost Andy Robertson, Mohamed Salah and Ibrahima Konate, all key parts of the title winning season, as free agents. In their place, the Reds have signed Victor Munoz and Jeremy Jacquet, the latter of which was a deal agreed in January.

Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz need to kick on this season after poor debut campaigns for Liverpool. With Iraola known for getting the best out of his players, both will be confident of showing fans why Liverpool broke their transfer record to sign the pair.

At the back, Virgil van Dijk remains an ever-present for the Reds in what could be his final season at the club. The same is true for Alisson, who will remain in goal for the duration of the season, unless something drastic changes. Both Alisson and Van Dijk see their contracts expire in July 2027.

Key Fixtures

Liverpool kick off the season with a tricky away match at St James Park, with Ladbrokes' latest Newcastle vs Liverpool odds tipping Iraola for a win in his first match as manager. The former Bournemouth boss' first match at Anfield is six days later on August 29, with Liverpool hosting Nottingham Forest.

Speaking of Bournemouth, Iraola returns to the Vitality Stadium with Liverpool on September 20. Their next match after that is a home fixture at Anfield against Man City, which in turn takes place three weeks before Liverpool host Arsenal at home.

Liverpool have a tricky few weeks as we approach the end of 2026, with away games against Everton and Chelsea and home fixtures against Man United and Sunderland all taking place between November 21 and December 5.

Iraola does have a rather easy Boxing Day fixture though, an away tie against Hull, before 2027 kicks off with a match against another newly promoted side, this time at Anfield against Coventry.

Liverpool then play Everton at Anfield and have away matches against Arsenal and Man United between January 23 and February 6 before a run of easier fixtures in the Spring.

May kicks off with a home match against Chelsea, before Liverpool travel to Manchester for an away fixture against Enzo Maresca's Man City seven days later. Liverpool then end the season at home to Iraola's former club, Bournemouth.

Liverpool Premier League prediction

We do think Liverpool are going to have a better season than they did last campaign, that's for sure. However, those expecting the Reds to immediately go back to their 'heavy metal' best may need to be a touch more patient.

It's going to take time for Liverpool's players to get used to Iraola's style of football, especially considering how different it is from Slot's.

As such, we don't think Liverpool are going to win the league, but they have too much quality and Iraola is too highly-regarded for the 2024/25 Premier League winners not to finish inside the top four.

As such, we're predicting Liverpool to finish third, behind Arsenal and Man City, come the end of the season in May 2027.
