The Premier League continues with some midweek action as reigning champions Liverpool take on high-flying Sunderland at Anfield on Wednesday night. British record signing Alexander Isak finally got off the mark in the Premier League for Liverpool in their 2-0 win at West Ham, producing an instinctive finish to give the Reds the lead and a reminder of his quality that led the champions to spend £125million on him. Isak has happy memories against Sunderland, scoring twice in Newcastle's 3-0 derby win in the FA Cup back in 2024. The Sunderland fans might even cheer him given his current relationship with their rivals, but we're backing Isak to continue his momentum by landing another shot on target here.

Granit Xhaka has been a revelation since arriving on Wearside from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer and a driving force behind Sunderland's surprising rise up the Premier League table. His leadership and ability to control the tempo has been crucial in helping the Black Cats adjust back to life in the top flight and he's chipped in with a goal and four assists too. He also retains the competitive streak he was renowned for Arsenal - his meeting with Joelinton in the Tyne-Wear Derby is not one to be missed - and has picked up four yellow cards this season. In the cauldron of Anfield, we reckon there's a good chance he gets another booking here.

A clean sheet at the weekend would have been very welcome for Arne Slot, and the next step will be achieving that at home where his team have been far from secure defensively in recent weeks. In the past two games at Anfield - both heavy defeats - Liverpool have conceded four to PSV in the Champions League and three to Nottingham Forest. They shouldn't underestimate a Sunderland team that have won at Stamford Bridge and taken points off leaders Arsenal, and just came from two goals down to defeat Bournemouth. We think there could be goals on the card in this one, so we're adding over 2.5 goals to our bet builder.

As mentioned above, Sunderland will prove a tough test for a Liverpool side still searching for the right formula after a summer of upheaval. Regis Le Bris' team sit 6th in the Premier League and will have no fear heading to Merseyside after their win at Chelsea, but that trip was sandwiched between losses at Fulham and Man United. Mo Salah could be back with a point to prove after being benched at West Ham, and Isak's goal will ease the pressure on his shoulders. We think that Liverpool will secure the three points and leapfrog Sunderland in the table.
