One of the Champions League's great modern rivalries begins yet another chapter on Wednesday as Real Madrid and Manchester City come to blows in the first leg of their last-16 tie.

These two sides have faced off an extraordinary 11 times in the last six seasons, including in the league phase of the current campaign when City ran out 2-1 winners at the Bernabeu, and 15 since they first met in 2012.

A similar result in the Spanish capital on Wednesday would be huge for City's hopes of reaching the quarter-final ahead of the second leg next week but it is Real who have the upper hand in two-legged knockout ties between the pair overall, dumping their opponents out four times compared to the Premier League side's two.

With Kylian Mbappe and Rodrygo ruled out and Jude Bellingham also a doubt, the burden will fall on Vinicius Jr to provide the spark in attack, and he proved in the play-offs against Benfica that it is a role he is well capable with a goal in each of the legs.

The Brazilian is a constant threat on the left side of Real's attack and has averaged 1.2 shots on target per game in the Champions League this season. With the other stars missing, that total is only likely to increase so we think he is a strong shout to test the keeper with an effort on goal here.

Erling Haaland missed Saturday's FA Cup win over Newcastle but is expected to be back in time for this game and should be fresh for the encounter.

Three goals in six previous games vs Real is a relatively modest total by Haaland's standards, but those have come across the two most recent fixtures, including earlier this season, so he will be in confident mood to make his mark. With 1.9 shots on target on average in the Champions League this season, we think backing the Norwegian for at least two shots on target feels like a reasonable shout.

Since 2019-20, there have been 43 total goals scored in 11 meetings between the pair, with some real classics played out in recent years gone by.
