Ryder Cup tips: Will a resurgent Tiger Woods make the difference?

The Ryder Cup swings back into action this week, with the USA looking to defend their title.

Paris hosts the tournament for the first time this year. That could be decisive. The USA haven’t won on foreign soil for 25 years.

But the American team is packed with star quality. They have 31 majors between them. Europe’s team only have eight.

The US are 4/5 favourites, with Europe at 5/4. It’s 12/1 for the draw. Before the action gets underway tomorrow, we’ve taken a look at the players on both sides that could make the difference…

USA

All eyes will be on Tiger Woods after his stunning PGA Championship win last weekend. After five years without a win on the Tour, he looked close to his very best again.

The veteran is 7/1 to be the Top USA Points Scorer and 12/1 to finish top overall. He’s also 3/1 favourite to be the Top Wildcard.

Woods may be the big story, but Dustin Johnson’s power and fourball play has taken him to the top of the world rankings. Yet he’s never really delivered at the Ryder Cup before.

He’s likely to be teamed up with fellow big-hitter Brooks Koepka on Friday. Can they blow the competition away? Johnson is the USA’s likeliest top scorer at 5/1, with Koepka just behind at 6/1.

It’s been an under-par season for former world number one Jordan Spieth. This is the perfect chance for him to end on a high.

After failing to qualify for the Championship, he’s been working hard to make sure he’s in top form here. We go 8/1 that USA lead after Day 1 and he wins 2 points.

Europe

FedEx Cup winner Justin Rose will be full of confidence. His putting has really come on in recent years, which means he’s got no clear weaknesses anymore. He’s always dependable and 5/1 to top the European scoring.

Rory McIlroy is also a 5/1 shot. He really comes to life against the US, scoring above .500 in all three Ryder Cup formats. It’s 8/1 that he plays and wins the first singles match.

Jon Rahm’s ability to rack up birdies could make him a key player for Europe for years to come. This will be his first appearance in the Ryder Cup. He’s 4/1 to be the Top Debutant.
