Sean Levey has two rides at Southwell on Saturday, October 17, 2026. The Ladbrokes ambassador previews them both in his latest exclusive blog, and also gives his thoughts on Champions Day at Ascot.

Portman Blue - Southwell - 4.23 race odds
Kaboom - Southwell - 6.30 race odds
I start Saturday with Portman Blue, a horse that found form last time, he was well supported and landed a gamble at Kempton. He seemed to go through the race relatively easily, travelled well and never really looked like getting beat on the day.
He does obviously carry a penalty here, but hopefully he still has a little bit up his sleeve and he can get his head in front again.
Kaboom is a two-year-old who has only had one start, so is still feeling his way. He's come on mentally from that first run, and I'd like to think he gives a good account of himself here.
I'm looking forward to watching the Champion Stakes at Ascot - albeit a small field, but it's a renewal filled with quality. The two horses at the top of the market are taking each other on again - they both have the same sort of profile, they both suffered defeat last time out, but the two horses seem to be very well-suited and seem to run really well at Ascot, so it'll be an interesting one.
The size of the field, for me, means Calandagan should have a straightforward ride and run. I see him beating Ombudsman again, just as he did in last year's Champion Stakes. But it's difficult to know which horse is going to turn up primed and ready on the day.
