World Grand Prix Tips: RVB, MVG, de Zwaan and Gurney to prevail?

Players will have to be at the double in Dublin across the next seven days as the World Grand Prix returns to our screens from the Citywest Hotel.

This tournament is the only televised event where players must start and finish each leg on a double. As usual, it’s Michael van Gerwen who is the favourite to prevail at 11/10.

His first round match is among the five standout ties we’ve previewed on the opening night.

Jeffrey de Zwaan v Kim Huybrechts

Four first round defeats in six appearances suggest Huybrechts doesn’t enjoy his trips to the Emerald Isle. His task this year is made even harder by the presence of Jeffrey de Zwaan.

The Dutchman has been in scintillating form. He reached the semi-final of the World Matchplay and boasts a 49% record on his doubles on TV this year.

He’s 4/6 to beat Huybrechts for the third time and 2/1 to do so by a 2-0 scoreline.

Ricky Evans v Raymond van Barneveld

The first ever meeting between these two is 4/11 to produce a Barneveld win. The Dutchman has been in terrific form on the box this year, reaching the quarter-finals or better in seven events.

His wealth of experience and consistent doubling should see him through here. We go 6/5 about a 2-0 Barney win and 5/4 about RVB nailing the Most 180s in the contest.

Daryl Gurney v John Henderson

A repeat of last year’s semi-final pits 2/5 shot Gurney up against Henderson at 2/1. The Northern Irishman prevailed 12 months ago before going onto win his first major PDC title.

He showed good form last week in the Champions League and should progress, so long as his doubling holds out. It’s 10/11 he edges the 180 count and 11/5 about a 2-1 win.

Michael van Gerwen v Steve Lennon

Can MVG return to form in Dublin? He should do in the first round at least. The Green Machine boasts a 5-0 record against Steve Lennon and is 1/10 to go through.

The Dutchman’s recent poor form suggests it may not be plain sailing, though. Lennon has taken legs off him before and won’t go down without a fight on home turf.

A 2-1 van Gerwen win pays 11/4, with his King of the Oche odds chalked up at 6/4.

Gary Anderson v Jonny Clayton

Fresh from Champions League success last week, Anderson is 1/4 to make it through to the second round in Dublin for the fifth straight year.

The Scotsman’s game is the best it’s ever been right now in terms of scoring and finishing. He’s 15/8 to win through as King of the Oche and 5/6 to record a 2-0 success.
