World Grand Prix Tips: We preview tonight’s semi-final matches

32 players came but only four remain as the World Grand Prix hurtles towards the semi-final stage this evening.

Michael van Gerwen remains the 4/9 tournament favourite, with Peter Wright (9/2), Mensur Suljovic (6/1) and Daryl Gurney (12/1) all looking to cause an upset.

Can any of them do it? We’ve previewed their respective semi-final bouts below.

Peter Wright v Mensur Suljovic (7:15pm)

The world’s second and sixth ranked players face-off in the first semi-final – and we’re expecting a close one. Both have been ultra-consistent so far, both in terms of scoring and doubling.

Wright heads into the match as the 8/11 favourite, yet it’s 11/10 shot Suljovic who boasts the better head-to-head record. The Austrian has won his last five matches against the Scotsman.

In terms of game-length, it could be a long one. Both of their matches yesterday went to the wire, and they’ve looked evenly matched all week. Over 5.5 Sets is priced at 8/15.

An extended encounter should also give the chance for plenty of power scoring. Wright hit the T20 bed on 10 occasions against James Wilson, with Suljovic clocking six against Gerwyn Price.

We go 4/5 about there being Over 4.5 180s tonight. The Gentle is 10/1 to end the match on his favourite D14, if he gets to finishing line before Wright.

Michael van Gerwen v Daryl Gurney (8:30pm)

After MVG claimed last week that Gurney isn’t a top-eight player, we’re expecting this match to have plenty of needle. The Dutchman is 1/7 to prevail, against 9/2 for the Northern Irishman.

Gurney is the sort of player to feed off criticism. He’ll need to up his average and maintain his checkout percentage of 75% from the last round, but he could run van Gerwen close.

We go 4/1 about a 4-2 victory for the Green Machine, with a 4-3 success priced at 13/2.

Both players tend to be dangerous on the trebles. But it hasn’t quite come together for either of them on that front this week. They’ve hit just 15 combined from six matches.

Under 10.5 Maximums tonight is available at 5/6, with Gurney – who leathered in five against Gary Anderson – a 5/4 shot to edge the T20 count.
