Ladbrokes previews Group J at the 2026 World Cup
Reigning world champions Argentina are odds-on to top the group and reach the knockouts
Austria and Algeria tipped to battle for second, with Jordan the group's outsiders

Ahead of the 2026 World Cup, Ladbrokes shares its in-depth Group J preview, with a look at each nation, the full schedule, and the bookies' favourites.
Reigning world champions Argentina are runaway favourites to top the group and qualify for the knockouts at something of a canter, but the battle for second promises to be full of intrigue as Algeria and Austria fight it out. Jordan are massive underdogs, but will be looking to make their first-ever World Cup a memorable one.
Having failed to qualify for the previous two World Cups, Algeria return to the global stage with a point to prove, and will have their sights firmly set on securing automatic qualification for the round of 32 with a top-two finish in Group J.
A sprinkling of big names will be gracing Vladimir Petkovic's squad this summer, from former Premier League star Riyad Mahrez to current Man City defender Rayan Ait-Nouri, and with just one previous appearance in a World Cup knockout round, Les Fennecs will be dreaming of breaking new ground in the States - but they face a tricky test in a balanced group.
Recent form suggests they'll be ready to compete this summer, however, with just one competitive defeat since June 2024, so Algeria's opening game against a fancied Argentina side could set up a strong campaign.
Among the favourites to go all the way this summer and win a second consecutive World Cup trophy, Argentina enter Group J as clear favourites to qualify for the knockouts, and with Lionel Messi just a few goals away from breaking Miroslav Klose's all-time goalscoring record, you wouldn't bet against him being the man to drive them there.
The experience of their 2022 triumph in Qatar will only spur Argentina on to enjoy another successful tournament, with Lionel Scaloni's side looking to reach back-to-back World Cup finals for just the second time in Argentine history, and having suffered just one defeat of any kind since November 2024, they seem perfectly placed to achieve just that.
A fourth World Cup trophy is certainly the aim in what will surely be Messi's last tournament, and in a group where they're likely to pick up plenty of positive momentum, Argentina once again have the potential to be one of this summer's standout sides.
Ladbrokes has priced Austria as second-favourites in Group J, narrowly edging out Algeria, so the 2026 World Cup presents the perfect opportunity for Ralf Rangnick's side to reach the knockouts for the first time since 1978.
Marko Arnautovic, Marcel Sabitzer, and David Alaba remain just a few of the key names who will be lining up for Austria this summer, and with added input from the likes of Carney Chukwuemeka and Christoph Baumgartner, there's every chance of a strong group-stage run for the Austrians - with a balanced, experienced squad guiding them through.
Their opening match against Jordan should see Austria get their World Cup campaign off to the perfect start, and if they can stay consistent in the bigger games, there's no reason why they can't go deep into the tournament this year.
Rounding off Group J are the outright underdogs, Jordan, who will make their World Cup debut when they kick-off against Austria on June 17 - but the bookies aren't giving them much hope of achieving anything too spectacular.
Ranked 63rd in the world, Jordan's expectations won't be particularly high, but the dream of making their mark at football's greatest competition will give them all the motivation they could possibly need to compete - and with only 16 teams being eliminated from the groups, a single positive result could make history for the debutants.
Rennes midfielder Mousa Tamari will be the man to watch for Jamal Sellami's side, but with so many players desperate to have an impact, Jordan could prove to be an intriguing addition to the Group J picture - even if their outright odds of World Cup glory do sit at 1000/1.
In what seems to be one of the more clear-cut groups at the 2026 World Cup, reigning champions Argentina are odds-on to finish top and progress to the knockouts for the fifth tournament in a row, with their star quality and elite experience putting them head and shoulders above their Group J opponents.
Austria (9/2) are next in line as second-favourites ahead of Algeria (11/2), but the two nations seem to be very evenly matched, with Ladbrokes not separating them by too much. Jordan bring up the rear in Ladbrokes' Group J odds as huge underdogs, and they will merely be looking to enjoy the summer as they make their World Cup debut.

Predicted standings:
1) Argentina
2) Austria
3) Algeria
4) Jordan
First and fourth seem quite straightforward to predict in Group J, with Argentina sitting at the top of the pile and Jordan struggling to make a dent at the bottom, but the battle for second looks much more entertaining.
Our experts are going with the odds, with Austria just about edging out Algeria for an automatic place in the round of 32 - but we wouldn't be surprised to see both teams qualify for the knockouts thanks to this World Cup's enlarged format.
