Aston Villa will be looking to get back to winning ways in the Premier League when they visit potential top-four rivals Newcastle.

Villa are in an excellent position to return to the Champions League as they fly high in third, but a defeat to Everton plus injuries and departures has left Unai Emery's squad looking slightly depleted as it stands.

Newcastle are slowly putting some form together and are one of a number of teams who will fancy themselves to get back in the running for the top four - a victory on Sunday could see them climb as high as fourth and subsequently close the gap behind Villa to seven points.

Our prediction: Newcastle 1-1 Aston Villa

Villa have outperformed Newcastle overall this season but Unai Emery's side have stumbled slightly of late, and injuries to John McGinn and Boubacar Kamara will only test what is a depleted squad further.

The Villans also have a horrendous record at St James' Park over the years, so it all points to them dropping more points on Sunday - although we do think they could still leave Tyneside with a point.

Harvey Barnes is enjoying his most productive campaign in a Newcastle shirt with 12 goals across all competitions, including three across his last three home games.

The winger also has an extremely good record against Villa, scoring six and assisting six in 15 previous games. After a blank in the reverse fixture at Villa Park at the start of the season, he'll be determined to keep that good record going.

Morgan Rogers has been Villa's talisman in attack this season and their reliance on the England international will only increase as their injuries stack up.

The 23-year-old is averaging just under a shot on target every game and had plenty of chances to score on an unusually wasteful night for the attacking midfielder against Everton, although he did still force a few good saves out of Jordan Pickford. Expect Rogers to test Nick Pope with at least one shot on goal on Sunday.

The average total goals per game for Newcastle and Villa are 2.7 and 2.6 respectively, so we think at least a couple of goals could be on the cards.

Prior to the stalemate at the start of the season, each of the last six games between these two breached the three-goal barrier, so we think at least two goals being scored feels more than reasonable.

Our final pick is to back either a Newcastle win or a draw in a double-chance bet. While we have gone for a 1-1 draw in the score prediction, there is every chance Newcastle get the win, given Villa's injuries and their strong home record against the West Midlands side.
