The players with the most yellow cards in Premier League history
Published:
The Premier League attracts some of the world's best players - but what makes the English game so renowned is its physicality and tough tackling.
As a result, plenty of players over the years were known for their no-nonsense approach, which made them no stranger to a booking.
Here is a rundown of the top 10 players who have racked up the most yellow cards over the years.
The most yellow cards in Premier League history
=10. Kevin Nolan (Bolton, Newcastle, West Ham) & George Boateng (Coventry, Aston Villa, Middlesbrough, Hull) - 85 yellow cards
A joint entry next and two midfield generals known for their no-nonsense grit.
Boateng was a midfield enforcer at Coventry, Aston Villa and Middlesbrough, while Nolan captained Bolton, Newcastle and West Ham with a mix of goals and growls. Both racked up 85 bookings apiece - true leaders in the art of the tactical foul.
9. Lee Cattermole (Middlesbrough, Wigan, Sunderland) - 88 yellow cards
An iconic tough tackler from the 2000s and 2010s, Lee Cattermole made the referee's book his second home with his hard-wired approach to the game.
The central midfielder amassed 88 yellow cards across his time in the Premier League, which were predominantly with Sunderland.
8. Robbie Savage (Leicester, Birmingham, Blackburn, Derby) - 89 yellow cards
Another midfielder who thrived in playing the role of the villain, Robbie Savage was a walking yellow card at all the top-flight clubs he played for.
A product of the Manchester United youth academy, Savage went on to play for Leicester, Birmingham, Blackburn and Derby.
7. Ashley Young (Watford, Aston Villa, Manchester United, Everton) - 91 yellow cards
Ashley Young burst onto the scene with Watford and Aston Villa as a graceful and tricky winger but later pivoted into a no-nonsense defender who wasn't afraid of a big tackle.
Now 40, the former England international has just joined Championship Ipswich, where he will no doubt continue to get stuck in.
6. Scott Parker (Charlton, Chelsea, Newcastle, West Ham, Tottenham, Fulham) - 92 yellow cards
There seems to be a common theme as midfielders dominate the top 10, with current Burnley manager Scott Parker the latest entry.
Parker was elegant on the ball but knew how to be aggressive off it and was a tough opponent for anyone he faced.
5. Paul Scholes (Manchester United) - 97 yellow cards
Paul Scholes is regarded as one of the Premier League's greatest ever midfielders - but tackling was not one of his strong points.
The 97 yellow cards picked up during his time with Manchester United were perhaps less down to malice and more due to his penchant for a mistimed tackle.
=3. Kevin Davies (Southampton, Blackburn Rovers, Bolton) & Lee Bowyer (Leeds, West Ham. Newcastle Birmingham) - 99 yellow cards
Kevin Davies and Lee Bowyer are tied in third place with both taking different approaches to picking up just shy of 100 yellow cards each.
Davies was a classic bruising striker who went to battle with defenders week in, week out, while Bowyer did his dirty work in the midfield engine room - both to great effect.
2. Wayne Rooney (Everton, Manchester United) - 102 yellow cards
The fact that Wayne Rooney is second for both goals and yellow cards in the all-time Premier League list sums up the legendary forward's style of play.
A world-class striker who could do it all with the ball at his feet, the former England captain was not afraid of a meaty challenge, while he would regularly lose his temper and wind up the opposition.
1. Gareth Barry (Aston Villa, Manchester City, Everton, West Brom) - 123 yellow cards
Coming in with a yellow card tally that will take a lot to beat in the modern era is the Premier League's record appearance holder Gareth Barry.
While his skill with the ball was excellent and somewhat underappreciated, Barry was a quiet enforcer who was a master of breaking up opposition play while rarely stepping over the red line.
