There are noteworthy positives about the whole field for this year's running of the oldest Classic but Lambourn and SCANDINAVIA rather stand out from the rest on their best form and Aidan O'Brien, their trainer, has won the race eight times. While Lambourn followed his two Derby wins with a muted display in the Great Voltigeur at York, Scandinavia has gone from strength to strength and shown an abundance of stamina, so he gets the vote despite O'Brien's apparent confidence that Lambourn needed that latest race. Similar, or arguably stronger, comments were made by the trainer about Stay True's fitness for the Voltigeur and he is the least exposed horse in the field after just three races, but he also has the most to prove regarding stamina. Carmers grabbed second from Stay True in the Voltigeur and earlier won the 1m6f Queen's Vase at Royal Ascot, just ahead of three of today's rivals, and Paddy Twomey's charge should ensure that this battle for the St Leger does not concern only the O'Brien runners.
