What is live football betting?

Live football betting means placing a bet after a match has kicked off. Also called in-play football betting, it lets you choose from the markets available while the game is being played.

The main difference is when you place your bet:

  • Pre-match betting: You place your bet before kick-off, using the available odds and information.
  • In-play betting: You place your bet during the match, with odds reflecting the scoreline, time remaining and events on the pitch.

You can browse live fixtures without placing a bet. Watching a match unfold does not guarantee you can predict what happens next.

Which live football betting markets can you explore?

Select a live match to view its available markets. Depending on the fixture and stage of play, options may include:

  • Match result: Choose a home win, draw or away win for the period specified.
  • Next goal: Predict which team will score next. Check the available options and what happens if there are no further goals.
  • Total goals: Predict whether the number of goals will be above or below the line shown.
  • Both teams to score: Predict whether each team will score at least once during the period covered.
  • Corners: Browse available markets on corner totals or the next corner.
  • Cards: Explore card or booking markets, checking how different cards are counted.
  • Player markets: Selected fixtures may include goalscorer or shots-on-target markets.

Read the market name and rules to understand the required outcome and period covered. Check whether earlier match events count towards settlement rather than assuming every in-play selection concerns only the remaining time.

How do live football odds work?

Live football odds show the potential return on a successful bet at the price offered during a match. They reflect what has happened in the game and how much time remains.

Prices can change following:

  • A goal: A change in the scoreline can affect match result and goals markets.
  • A red card: A team losing a player can affect prices across several markets.
  • Time passing: With less time remaining, the likelihood of some outcomes changes.

For example, as a goalless match approaches full-time, the odds of another goal may lengthen. Other events can still affect the price.

Review the odds and potential return on your betslip before confirming. A shorter price does not guarantee a winning result.

Why are in-play markets sometimes suspended?

An in-play market may be temporarily suspended while a match is underway. During a suspension, you cannot place a new bet on that market.

Suspensions can occur while a significant match event is being assessed or prices are being updated. If the market reopens, the available odds may have changed.

Check your bet history to confirm acceptance. Adding a selection to your betslip does not mean a bet has been placed.

Can live scores and broadcasts be delayed?

Yes. Live scores, match statistics and broadcasts can reach you after the action has happened on the pitch. Different sources can also update at different times.

  • Your information may be behind the match: A goal or red card may have happened before you see it.
  • Displays may update separately: Your broadcast, score display and betting markets may not update together.
  • Markets may change first: Odds can move or betting can be suspended before your score display or broadcast catches up.

Use live information as a guide rather than assuming it is instant.

Live football betting advice and strategy

Take time to assess the match rather than reacting to a single moment. No live football betting strategy guarantees a win or removes the risk of losing your stake.

  • Consider the match context: A team protecting a late lead faces a different situation from one trailing early in the game. Think about how this relates to your chosen outcome.
  • Look beyond one statistic: Possession or shot totals alone do not tell you how a match will finish. Consider substitutions, red cards and the wider state of the game.
  • Keep to your planned budget: Changing odds do not mean you need to place another bet. Avoid increasing your stakes to recover losses.

You can choose not to bet if the information or market is unclear.

Football promotions

Explore our Ladbrokes promotions and offers to see what’s currently available for football.

If you’re considering an offer, check whether bets placed during a match qualify. Read the terms for eligibility, qualifying markets, minimum odds and any deadlines before taking part.

Keep your stakes within your planned budget, whether you use a promotion or not.

Responsible live football betting

Live odds and markets can change quickly, but you do not need to place a bet in response. Set a budget before you start and only stake what you can afford to lose.

Keep track of your total stakes and avoid placing further bets to recover losses. Take a break if you feel rushed or find it difficult to stay within your limits.

Our safer gambling tools can help you set limits and manage your betting.

Please gamble responsibly.
