Twelve years after a wonderful trip to the last eight of the World Cup, Colombia have reason to dream again after they finished top of Group K ahead of Portugal. An entertaining 0-0 draw (we promise) with the European heavyweights in the final group match sealed that spot, after back-to-back wins against Uzbekistan and DR Congo.
Ghana, who were also quarter-finalists in 2010, advanced to the knockout stages as one of the best third-placed teams after finishing with 4 points in Group L. The Black Stars won their opening game with a last-gasp winner against Panama, before holding England to a creditable point in a very forgettable goalless draw. Ghana have been defensively solid without offering much going forward, and progressed despite a 2-1 loss to Croatia in their last group game.
Colombia have won four of their last five games, while the Panama game was Ghana's only win in their last eight games. The west African nation will look to frustrate the South Americans, who will be backed by legions of their loyal fans in Kansas City, but the atmosphere and gulf in quality should make the difference for Colombia. We're predicting a narrow 1-0 win for Colombia against Ghana.
Colombia conceded only one goal in the group stages, while Ghana scored just twice. Going further back, Ghana haven't scored more than one goal in any of their last eight matches.
Although Colombia put three past Uzbekistan, they only scored once in their last two games against DR Congo and Portugal. Two out of three group games for each country went under 2.5 goals, so we're tipping that as part of our Colombia vs Ghana bet builder.
James Rodriguez was the star of Colombia's run to the quarter-finals in 2014, and he is still around, but the key man for the 2026 side is clearly Bayern Munich forward Luis Diaz.
Diaz had a superb season for the Bundesliga champions, scoring 26 goals and providing 23 assists in 51 games in all competitions, as part of one of Europe's best attacks with Michael Olise and Harry Kane.
The ex-Liverpool winger managed a goal and an assist in the group stages, a respectable return, and is averaging over one shot on target per game in the World Cup. We're backing Diaz to continue to make an impact by having at least one shot on target against Ghana.
Antoine Semenyo arrived at the World Cup in fine form after scoring 21 goals in all competitions for Bournemouth and Manchester City, and even if Ghana aren't the most expansive side, he poses a major threat on the counter attack with his directness and finishing ability.
If Semenyo starts on the left wing, he'll be up against Crystal Palace full-back Daniel Munoz, who is one of the Premier League's best in the position going forward but will leave space to exploit. We think the City forward will test the keeper at least once in the last 32.
