Arsenal very narrow favourites to beat Man City

Arsenal are not only the favourites to win the Premier League, but they're also the favourites to win the Community Shield in Cardiff before the season officially starts.

However, there is very little to separate the two sides. Ladbrokes has given Arsenal an assumed probability of winning the match inside 90 minutes of 40%, while Man City's sits at over 38%.

There's less than 2% separating the two sides with regards to their chances of winning the match, and there's a few reasons for that.

FIFA has mandated that players must be given three weeks off during the off-season, and that includes after the World Cup. That means that Arsenal's Mikel Merino, Bukayo Saka, Martin Zubimendi and Declan Rice will only be returning to training less than a week before the Community Shield.

Couple that with the injury to William Saliba, which is set to see the Frenchman missing for an "extended period" and it's hard to see Arsenal lining up without several key players missing.

They aren't alone in that too, with Marc Guehi, Nico O'Reilly, Rayan Cherki and new signing Elliot Anderson all reaching the latter stages of the World Cup. Like their Arsenal counterparts, they too will only have been in training for a matter of days by the time this match rolls around.

A traditional Arsenal vs Man City match in the Premier League will be easy to predict with regards to the line-ups, but you'd have to be a genius to predict exactly which 22 players will start in Cardiff on August 16.

Interestingly, three of the last five Community Shields have seen the FA Cup winner lift the trophy rather than the side who won the Premier League in the season prior, perhaps giving the edge to Man City.

An interesting bet could be the match ending in a draw and going to penalties, with 60% of the last ten Community Shield matches being decided by a penalty shootout.

For what it's worth, the Community Shield isn't the next time we'll see an English club compete in a competitive match, with Aston Villa and PSG playing in the Super Cup on August 12, which the French side are tipped to win.

The Super Cup takes place four days before the Community Shield, which in turn is scheduled to take place just five days before Arsenal kick off the Premier League season against Coventry on Friday, August 21.

The Community Shield presents a good opportunity for Arsenal to prepare for their opening Premier League match against Coventry, and gives Man City the same opportunity before their first game against Bournemouth. For those interested, last year's first and second-placed teams are both tipped to win those games.
