Manchester City vs Borussia Dortmund: Champions League betting tips and predictions

Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund are neck and neck in the Champions League standings as they prepare to face off in what should be an exciting clash on Wednesday evening.

The duo sit seventh and sixth respectively after each picking up seven points in the league phase so far and a win for either side would see them take a giant step towards cementing themselves in the top eight - and therefore automatic progression to the last 16.

With a spectacular 26 goals in 16 games for club and country this season, teams who are able to prevent Erling Haaland from finding the net are becoming an increasing rarity.

The Norwegian comes up against his former club Dortmund for the third time, having scored against them in the home tie in the 2022/23 season, and will surely play a decisive role in any City win on Wednesday night, having scored 16 of City's 26 total goals this term.

Given the form the striker is in, backing a Haaland brace in this clash seems very plausible.

While City will dominate possession at home, they have shown they are far from immune from being hurt on the counter-attack, particularly with Rodri still sidelined, as Bournemouth and Aston Villa showed in their most recent two Premier League games.

Only holders and favourites Paris Saint-Germain have scored more goals than Dortmund in the Champions League this season and, as a result, expect both defences to be breached.

In the cards market, we're going for Borussia Dortmund right-back Yan Couto - who returns to the Etihad having progressed through the City academy as a youngster.

Now 23, Couto is a staple in the right wingback position for the Black and Yellow but could be in for a tough evening in Manchester up against the pace and trickery of Jeremy Doku.

With two yellow cards already this season, we think the Brazilian is the most susceptible to going in the referee's book as he looks to halt what should be a regular stream of attacks from the hosts.

Dortmund have European pedigree of their own but will go into this game as massive underdogs against a City side who rarely lose at home.

The Citizens have only lost once in six previous meetings with the Bundesliga club, which came on away soil. At home, their record against them is two wins and a draw and, given they will come into the game with plenty of confidence after dispatching Bournemouth, we are backing another victory for the hosts - as have done in our Champions League acca predictions.
