Premier League title race: Manchester City closing in on Arsenal

Arsenal remain the title favourites with odds at evens (1/1) to defend their title, but City, who are top of the Premier League after taking maximum points from five, are close on their tail as far as the betting is concerned.

Enzo Maresca's side are just 6/4 to win the title once again after going two seasons without one, suggesting the bookies believe it'll be a two-horse race at this early stage.

The Gunners ended their long wait for a Premier League title last season and retain plenty of the core that delivered that success, but their first defeat of the campaign has given their rivals an early opportunity to apply pressure.

With 33 games still to play, a single result is unlikely to define the race, though it has undoubtedly tightened the market between the leading two.

Away from Arsenal and Man City, the early signs suggest they will have little competition from other sides in their respective pursuits of the title.

That is best illustrated the fact that third-favourites Liverpool are all the way back at 16/1. The Reds are unbeaten in the top flight under Andoni Iraola but have won only two of their five games, leaving them in sixth in the table.

Chelsea are fourth in line according to the bookies at 25/1, with a draw to Hull and 3-0 defeat at Brentford suggesting there is still plenty of work for Xabi Alonso to do to get the Blues fully firing again.

Similar can be said for Michael Carrick at Manchester United (50/1) after winning only one of their first five games, with the Red Devils actually behind Brighton (40/1) in the current market with the Seagulls up in third after three wins, a draw and a defeat so far.

Looking further back in the market, the likes of Tottenham (200/1), Aston Villa (250/1) and Newcastle (250/1) have seen their title odds grow massively after slightly tricky starts to the season, with Brentford actually given a better chance by the bookies at 100/1.

Spurs are currently bottom of the Premier League, with their woeful start, following on from consecutive 17th-place finishes in the last two seasons, suggesting relegation to the Championship is a much more realistic prospect to worry about than the the title.

Leeds are another team who have impressed early on as they sit fifth, but the bookies are still giving them a huge 200/1 price for the title.
