Ruben Amorim under pressure as Gareth Southgate leads odds to become next Man United boss
Published:
Ruben Amorim’s grip on the Manchester United job is weakening after a turbulent week which saw his side draw 1-1 with Fulham in the Premier League before being dumped out of the Carabao Cup by League Two side Grimsby Town.
The shock penalty shootout defeat has sent his odds tumbling. Once considered safe, Amorim is now one of the favourites to be the next Premier League manager to leave, which would make him the first to go this season.
Punters don’t see him lasting long either, with the ex-Sporting Lisbon boss being odds-on to NOT be United boss come December 31st, 2025 – a stark contrast to the optimism that surrounded his appointment.
Next Man United manager odds
Southgate the favourite to become next Man United manager
If Amorim does get the axe, one name stands clear at the top of the market: Sir Gareth Southgate. The England manager, fresh from another deep run at Euro 2024, is seen as the likeliest candidate despite mixed reactions from United fans.
Former midfielder Michael Carrick follows, with fellow back-three manager and current Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner also in the running.
Cal Gildart of Ladbrokes said: “Ruben Amorim promised United fans that the glory days are coming back, but the odds suggest that it won’t be on his watch. Sir Gareth Southgate might not be a popular choice with fans, but he’s the frontrunner – and the last knight in the dugout didn’t do too badly.”
Wider Premier League Picture
While Amorim’s situation dominates the headlines, the markets are also heating up elsewhere.
Liverpool and Arsenal are currently joint-favourites to lift the Premier League title at the end of the season, while Manchester City sit just behind in the betting after an inconsistent start.
At the other end of the table, Brentford are fancied to avoid the drop despite losing their manager this summer along with several key players. As is becoming somewhat of an unfortunate trend, promoted sides Burnley and Sunderland are tipped to go back down to the Championship at the end of the season, with Wolves also priced as relegation favourites ahead of Leeds.
When it comes to individual honours, Erling Haaland and Mohamed Salah continue to dominate the Golden Boot betting market, while Bukayo Saka is the current favourite for PFA Player of the Season.
