Man Utd make their Champions League return for the first time in three years with a supposedly favourable game against Sabah, an Azerbaijani club who are appearing in the competition for the first time.

When United last won the Champions League in 2008, Sabah were not even a club. In fact, they weren't formed for another nine years in 2017, when the Red Devils were celebrating winning the Europa League, their last European honour.

The two clubs could hardly be further apart in terms of stature, but Sabah will head to Old Trafford on Thursday with hope of pulling off a shock against a United side who are hardly unbeatable.

United have already been stunned in a 2-0 loss by Hull City on the opening day of the Premier League, while they also went behind against fellow newly-promoted side Ipswich at home before they eventually went on to win 5-2. They then let a two-goal lead slip to draw 2-2 with Everton, so their start to the season with Carrick as permanent boss has hardly been ideal.

What's more, their last Champions League campaign in 2023/24 saw them trail at some point in five of their six games as they were knocked out in the group stage, while their previous campaign in 2021/22 saw them go behind against both Villarreal and Atalanta at home, suggesting poor starts in Europe are something of a common theme.

Although a Sabah win feels a step too far, backing the visitors to scare the hosts certainly feels worth a punt.
