Everton haven't won a trophy in 31 years and their expectant fans will be hoping to advance against a Newcastle side that tasted success recently in the Carabao Cup when they won it in 2025.
Both sides have had solid if unspectacular starts to the season, with Newcastle 8th in the Premier League and Everton in 11th, but neither have been playing particularly convincing football. The Magpies picked up a much-needed 2-0 win at Crystal Palace after being booed off in their previous home loss to Aston Villa.
Everton started the season unbeaten in six games but have suffered consecutive losses to Chelsea and Arsenal. They drew four of those six, and with not much to split the two teams, we're predicting it to end even after 90 minutes.
With no extra-time until the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup, that would mean this one is decided by penalties.
Everton have a poor recent record on penalties, only winning two of their last ten shootouts. However, that has to change eventually right? And we reckon ex-Sunderland stopper Jordan Pickford will need no motivation against his great rivals, with the England keeper giving the Toffees the edge.
After the deadline-day dramatics that saw Everton fail to land a striker, Thierno Barry entered the season as their only recognised centre-forward.
Luckily for them he's started the season in strong form, with six goals in all competitions including a hat-trick in their second round win at Preston.
Barry is averaging 1.9 shots on target per game in all comps, failing to hit the target just once in ten games. We're backing Barry to have another shot on target here.
Harvey Barnes scored the crucial second goal at Selhurst Park in a strong second-half performance from Newcastle. After a number of key departures on Tyneside, Barnes has had to step up, providing four goals and two assists so far this season.
The winger scored a brace as The Magpies beat West Brom in the second round, and we're tipping him to make an impact again, with at least one shot on target.
