It's the game no one wants to play in as France and England face off in the bronze medal match, after seeing their World Cup dreams dashed in the semi-finals. France were underwhelming as they were surprisingly beaten 2-0 by Spain, while England suffered a heart-breaking late defeat to Argentina after leading 1-0 with five minutes left to play.
Both managers are likely to take the chance to hand game time to players that have been on the fringes of the squad at this tournament, and we've taken a separate look at how England might line up in their final game at the 2026 World Cup. Didier Deschamps calls time on his long and successful reign as France head coach, winning 120 and losing just 29 of his 184 games so far, with the undoubted highlight the victorious World Cup campaign in 2018.
Before their shock 2-0 defeat to Spain, France had been the favourites to win the World Cup, and the surprise at the result was not detracting from an excellent Spanish side but rather due to how high many people's expectations for the French had been. England fought and scrapped their way to the last four with some performances full of heart, but they ultimately fell short again and rarely played with fluency for a full 90 minutes.
Les Bleus' strength in depth is better than England's, and they should be fired up to give Deschamps the send-off he deserves. We're predicting a 2-1 win for France in the World Cup third-place play-off.
Even with many of the starters rested, there'll still be plenty of attacking firepower on display, with the likes of Rayan Cherki and Marcus Rashford hardly getting a look-in so far at this World Cup. England's defence proved to be their eventual downfall, and France have more than enough quality to take advantage.
However, William Saliba picked up a worrying looking back injury against Spain, and his likely replacement Ibrahima Konate has been error-prone over the last twelve months. Both teams have scored in each of England's last four games, and we're tipping that to happen again as part of our England vs France bet builder.
France captain and talisman Kylian Mbappe has continued his remarkable World Cup record in 2026. The Real Madrid forward has extended his all-time tally to 20 goals, the joint-most along with Lionel Messi, who he also shares the Golden Boot race with in 2026.
Both have scored eight goals, with Messi currently ahead by virtue of having more assists, and you can be sure that Mbappe will be desperate to play to boost his chances of winning top goalscorer as well as the Golden Ball. Mbappe is averaging three shots on target per game at the World Cup, so we're backing him to have at least two shots on target against England.
Harry Kane didn't put in the sort of performance we've come to expect from the skipper against Argentina, but he was still instrumental in helping the Three Lions get as far as they did. England's all-time record goalscorer is not out of the Golden Boot race himself, with his six goals joint-third along with Jude Bellingham.
Kane starts basically every single England game and you imagine he will be keen to do so here in what could be his last World Cup match. Kane is averaging 1.9 shots on target per game in the tournament, so we're tipping Harry to have at least two shots on target against France.
