It's been an inconsistent start to the season for Newcastle under new manager Matthias Jaissle, which was perhaps to be expected after losing a host of key players and Eddie Howe in the summer. After a step forward in their 2-0 away win at Palace, they took one back with their poor defeat on Merseyside.
They are still above their opponents in the Premier League, with Newcastle in 8th and Everton 11th, but the table is so bunched that it means little. Just six points separate 6th and 20th. Everton are yet to win on the road this season, but have also only suffered one defeat, and that was at champions Arsenal.
The Toffees are unbeaten on their last three visits to St. James' Park, and outperformed the Magpies in all departments midweek. Another win wouldn't entirely be a surprise, despite the odds, but we think the Geordie faithful will demand a performance after a loss against Aston Villa in their last home game. That might be enough to lift their team to a draw, so we'll predict a 2-2.
Newcastle managed to get a late consolation goal through Dan Burn, which means both teams have scored in each of the last three meetings between the two. Jaissle's side have failed to keep a clean sheet at home this season, while Everton have conceded at least twice in all of their last three league games. We're backing both teams to score in our Newcastle vs Everton Bet Builder.
Thierno Barry continued his good start to the season by grabbing the third goal in midweek, which effectively killed the game off. That was his seventh goal in all competitions this season and the Everton striker is averaging 1.9 shots on target per game. Barry also scored in last season's visit to St. James', so we're tipping him to have another shot on target here.
Joelinton missed the early part of the season through injury but Newcastle's enforcer has wasted no time getting back to his usual tricks. The Brazilian has picked up two bookings in three league games, and to no one's surprise was front and centre of the melee after Burn's late goal on Thursday, for which he also received a booking. It is unlikely Big Joe has forgotten that, and given the chance to immediately make amends, we think there's a good chance he collects consecutive cards against Everton.
