NFL Week 12 comes to a conclusion on Monday night featuring a game that may factor in the NFC Wild-Card chase as the Carolina Panthers, not exactly regulars on MNF, visit the San Francisco 49ers, who are -7 on the NFL odds with a total of 48.5.
NFL Week 12, Monday Night Football: 49ers vs Panthers odds and prediction
Point Spread and Betting Analysis
Tampa Bay is probably going to win the NFC South and either the Los Angeles Rams or Seattle most likely wins the NFC West. That means the only route to the post-season for both Carolina and San Francisco likely is via one of the NFC’s three Wild-Card spots.
Carolina has definitely improved this year but has missed the playoffs seven years running and most likely will again – priced at 9/2 to make it and 2/13 to miss. A successful season would be a 9-8 mark for the team’s first winning record since its last playoff trip in 2017. Because the Panthers haven’t been good in a while, they don’t get the Monday night spotlight often with just two games since 2018.
San Francisco is a perennial NFC contender and staple on Monday Night Football, but the Niners could miss the playoffs a second season in a row after nearly winning the Super Bowl following the 2023 campaign. Injuries certainly have not helped in either season since. The remaining schedule, though, is pretty manageable so the 49ers should get a WC spot. They are 1/8 to get in.
Including one post-season game (following the 2013 season), the Panthers surprisingly lead this all-time series 13-10. But they haven’t played since 2022, and San Francisco has won the past two in blowout fashion.
Carolina Panthers
Carolina won for the fifth time in seven games Sunday with a 30-27 OT upset in Atlanta. Panthers QB and former No. 1 overall pick Bryce Young threw for a franchise-record 448 yards along with three scores. That should quiet any doubters about Young for a while. He entered the game averaging the fewest pass yards in the NFL this season (among QBs with at least nine starts) at only 168.2 yards per game, while Atlanta entered with the league’s No. 1 pass defence at 162.3 YPG. Carolina had the most pass yards vs the NFL’s No. 1 pass defence in 38 years. Rookie receiver Tetairoa McMillan had eight catches for 130 yards and two touchdowns. Young did leave Sunday’s game briefly with an ankle injury so monitor that, but now the Cats have an extra day off this week. No doubt Carolina caught a break in that Falcons starting QB Michael Penix Jr. had to leave in the third quarter injured and wasn’t able to get back. The Panthers have now topped their 2024 win total; their betting win total entering this season was 6.5. Carolina is 4-1 ATS in its past five on the road.
San Francisco 49ers
The 49ers finally got injured QB Brock Purdy back on Sunday and the offence blew up in a 41-22 win at Arizona. Purdy had three TD passes and didn’t turn it over. He threw at least three touchdown passes with no interceptions for the ninth time in his career, tied with Jeff Garcia for the fourth most in franchise history. The team is 2-1 in Purdy’s three starts this year. His top wideout, Ricky Pearsall, also returned from a long absence but had just one catch for three yards. Christian McCaffrey had two rushing touchdowns and a receiving score, extending his NFL record with his 17th career game with at least one running touchdown and a touchdown catch. The San Francisco defence has been ravaged by injury and did allow a ton of yards Sunday but picked off two passes. The team had only a single INT in the first 10 games. The Niners have now surpassed their 2024 win total of six. They are 1-5 ATS in their past six at home.
