River King did ever so well to win at Doncaster last time, producing a career-best performance. He carried top weight on heavy ground and won decisively, but he’s gone up five pounds and has top weight again this week, carrying 10st 2lb.
The ground is drying out as we haven’t had rain for a few days, so conditions will be different. Asking him to back up such a big performance just a week later makes this a tough task. He’d have to be quite the horse to defy all that, but I do like him an awful lot, so hopefully he can do it!
Bengal Tiger also comes here after winning last week, but he carries the same weight this time. He’s stepping up in grade from a Listed race, which he won very easily, although I don’t think that field was as strong as the one he faces here. He’s a big, strong horse who is still lightly raced, and I feel he could take a big step forward. He’ll probably go off favourite.
Haven is stepping down in grade after finishing second in the Group 1 Fillies’ Mile over this course and distance last time. She’ll go off a very short price, and it looks as though conditions will be similar to those she encountered that day. If she reproduces that performance, she’ll be very hard to beat.
Nahraan ran a very big race on his last outing at Sandown, and he comes from a yard that does really well with this sort of horse. It’s a competitive race, but on his previous form over the trip, I’d imagine he’ll be very competitive.
I thought High Calibre ran really well last time at Bath, although he’s showing signs of being a bit of a character. He travelled very strongly up with the leaders and was the last off the bridle, but he hung left under pressure. I felt he had a little more to give that day. This track should suit him, particularly given how well he travelled last time. He’s progressing, and his syndicate should have a lot of fun with him throughout the winter.
He’s a straightforward horse who has been very consistent all year, and his yard has done extremely well with this type of horse this season. You’d imagine he comes here with a live chance, racing on home territory on the back of a promising run.
