Super Bowl 60 odds: New England Patriots vs Seattle Seahawks preview and prediction
Seahawks favourites to beat Patriots in Super Bowl LX
Seattle are favoured by 4.5 points on the spread, with the money line odds coming in at 2/5, and the Patriots priced at 19/10. The points total is set at 45.5.
These two teams famously met in Super Bowl 49 back in 2015, when they were led by franchise quarterbacks Russell Wilson and Tom Brady. The Seahawks trailed 28-24 in the final minute with the ball at the Patriots 1-yard line, before Malcolm Butler famously intercepted Wilson at the goal-line, rather than Seattle handing the ball off to all-star running back Marshawn Lynch, giving New England their fourth Super Bowl triumph. Brady and coach Bill Belichick - recently controversially snubbed for the Hall of Fame - won two more titles afterwards, while it's the Seahawks' first trip back to the big game since then.
Neither team entered the 2025 season with serious Super Bowl aspirations, yet find themselves sixty minutes from glory after an extraordinary NFL season. Seattle were a relatively unknown quantity, finishing 10-7 in coach Mike McDonald's first season, but seemingly rebuilding after trading away QB Geno Smith and wide receiver DK Metcalf.
They signed free agent QB Sam Darnold, fresh off a comeback season in Minnesota, and the results have been remarkable. The Seahawks stormed to the NFC's number one seed with a 14-3 record, backed by an elite defense that ranked 1st for points per game allowed (17.2), and an explosive passing attack (3rd, 28.4 ppg) led by Darnold and Jaxon Smith-Njigba, the league's leading receiver with 1,793 yards.
New England had been in a period of transition themselves, spending rare years in the wilderness after the success of the Brady-Belichick era, with only one playoff appearance since Brady left Foxboro after the 2019 season. Belichick departed after a 4-13 season in 2023, before Jerod Mayo lasted just one year as head coach after finishing with the same record.
Head coach Mike Vrabel, who won three Super Bowls in New England as a player, has overseen a superb turnaround, taking the Patriots to a 14-3 record, the AFC East crown and second seed in the AFC. Second year QB Drake Maye has played at an MVP level all year commanding an offense that ranked 2nd for points per game (28.8) and 3rd for yards per game (379.4), while their defense has been quietly excellent, ranking 4th in points per game (18.8) in the regular season and has roared to the fore in the playoffs.
Looking at the Super Bowl MVP odds, Darnold is the favourite to be Super Bowl MVP at 23/20, followed by Maye (23/10), Smith-Njigba (5/1) and Kenneth Walker (7/1). The winning quarterback has won the award in seven of the last ten Super Bowls.
Seattle Seahawks form, players to watch
The Seahawks secured crucial wins late in the regular season over their NFC West rivals Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers to secure the conference's top seed, before repeating the trick in the postseason. After their first-round playoff bye, they steamrolled the 49ers 41-6 in the Divisional Round before winning a thrilling 31-27 shootout against the Rams in the Conference Championship.
Those wins showcased Seattle's ability to win in different ways. Against San Francisco, they dominated in the trenches, smothering 49ers running-back Christian McCaffrey while Seahawks RB Kenneth Walker cantered to 116 yards and three touchdowns. Their defense was utterly dominant, holding the 49ers to 6 points and forcing three turnovers. The week afterwards against the Rams, Darnold was flawless in throwing for 346 yards and three touchdowns, going toe-to-toe in a shootout with presumptive MVP Matthew Stafford, and silencing his many doubters by delivering in a playoff game. Special teams also played a key role as Seattle recovered a fumbled punt with the game finely balanced at 17-13.
Smith-Njigba shone again against LA, pulling in ten catches for 153 yards and a touchdown. JSN averaged 105.5 yards per game during the regular season, and his over/under total for Sunday is 93.5 receiving yards. It's been a remarkable career turnaround for Darnold, selected as the third overall pick in the 2018 Draft by the New York Jets, failed in New York and Carolina before reviving his career with the Vikings, and now has a shot at immortality. Darnold's passing yards total is set at 231.5.
A good rushing attack is often a feature of a successful postseason formula, and Kenneth Walker has been electric in the playoffs, compiling 256 scrimmage yards (178 rushing, 78 receiving) over his two games, adding four touchdowns. He'll carry the bulk of the workload again with Zach Charbonnet sidelined through injury, with Walker's rushing total set at 72.5 yards.
Among Darnold's other weapons are a former Super Bowl MVP in wide receiver Cooper Kupp, who caught a touchdown in the win over his former Rams side. Rashid Shaheed has added a deep threat since his midseason trade from New Orleans and is an explosive punt returner, while tight end AJ Barner is a threat in the redzone with six touchdowns on the year.
New England Patriots form, players to watch
Many expected 2025 to be the season the Buffalo Bills and Josh Allen finally got over the hump and won a Super Bowl, but instead it's a different AFC East team that finds themselves in Santa Clara after a superb season. New England's defense has come to the party in the playoffs and played a starring role in each win. In the Wild Card round they held the Chargers to just 3 points, before harassing Texans QB CJ Stroud into four interceptions in the Divisional Round and outlasting the Denver Broncos in the snow in a 10-7 win in the AFC title game.
Drake Maye, the #3 pick in the 2024 Draft, showed bright signs in his rookie year but has taken huge strides in his sophomore season, throwing for 4,394 yards, 31 touchdowns and just 8 interceptions. Maye is also a threat with his legs, rushing for 450 yards and 4 touchdowns, and proved that by rushing for over 60 yards in their playoff victories against the Chargers and Broncos.
During the regular season the Patriots utilised a split backfield of Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson, but Stevenson has emerged as the primary ball-carrier in the playoffs, rushing for at least 70 yards in each of the last two. Stevenson's over/under is set at 49.5 rushing yards, although he's yet to add to his nine regular season TDs in the playoffs.
New England's offense is not a star-studded cast, but Stefon Diggs is probably the biggest name, and proved a useful free-agent addition after surpassing 1,000 receiving yards in the regular season. Kayshon Boutte had 75 yards and produced a stunning one-handed catch for a touchdown against Houston, while no Patriot has caught more touchdowns than tight end Hunter Henry (8).
Super Bowl prediction: Who will win Seahawks vs Patriots?
This could end up being a defensive chess match, with both offenses looking to avoid early mistakes to hand the other side initiative. A key battle will be whether Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez can lock up Smith-Njigba. Pats defensive linemen Milton Williams and Christian Barmore will be crucial to stopping the run and applying pressure to Darnold.
Seattle will be desperate for rookie safety Nick Emmanwori to be healthy for the big game, as his versatility is crucial to Mike McDonald's creative defensive schemes. DaMarcus Lawrence, Byron Murphy and Leonard Williams anchor a fearsome D-Line, with Ernest Jones IV the field general at linebacker, and Devon Witherspoon is one of the league's elite corners. It's a unit that, if victorious, could go down as one of the best defenses of all time, to match the famous 'Legion of Boom' Seahawks that won the Super Bowl in 2014, and so nearly went back-to-back before losing in heartbreaking fashion to these Patriots.
As much as it will be a battle of two strong defenses, the game will ultimately be decided by the two quarterbacks. Sam Darnold is out to complete the ultimate comeback story, while Drake Maye is attempting to follow in the footsteps of the greatest quarterback of all time. No franchise has more than the Patriots' nine Super Bowls, but this time around Seattle possess the more complete squad, and New England don't have a difference maker on offense like JSN. The Seahawks ground game has hit top gear, and combined with Darnold's explosive passing has found the right balance at the right time. Maye will put up a good fight, but Seattle's defense should ultimately prove too strong. We're predicting that the Seahawks will win their second Lombardi Trophy.
