Indemnity - Market Rasen - 2.10 race odds
It's just the one ride for me at Market Rasen on Saturday... it's the first weekend of the holidays too, so I'm sure the traffic is going to be wonderful on the way up!Â
Indemnity is a good little horse, and the last time I rode him he won the Sussex Champion Hurdle down at Plumpton. He was brilliant that day, I always thought he was going to win and he spun me round nicely there. He picked up 10lb for that win, and has since gone back down 1lb, so he's effectively 9lb worse off than the last day I rode him. He's got top weight, I don't think it's an overly competitive race compared to what it has been over the last few years, but if you're the right side of the handicap, then you've got a chance here.Â
Obviously this summer has been a lot harder - weather-wise - than in recent years. I'm lucky that I don't have to be going riding every day of the week, because I've got Ben [Pauling] supporting me throughout the winter, so it gives me a bit of time at home throughout the summer. Obviously Ben's had a fair few horses in, and when they've gone running, I've gone racing. But if it wasn't for that, and a few for Emma [Lavelle] then I haven't really been that busy. I know that changes by the time October swings around though, when it's all systems go.
We still had a lot of horses in to run at the start of the season; we probably had 50 or 60 that were still in to run a few months back, and that put me in a decent position because I was able to get nine winners on the board early doors. I've barely ridden though since then, so to get a few winners on the board without riding as much, it's a win-win situation for me.Â
The target for this season is 100 winners again, as it was last year. I think it's a fairly achievable target - I hit 102 last year, and there was a period last year where it looked like I wasn't going to get it. It was touch and go, and luckily I managed to get it. If I can maintain that level again this year, then I'm happy. You know, I'm only 26, and I've already got 36 big winners to my name... that, to me, is pretty big. So if I can maintain those big wins and hit the 100, then that's a successful year for us.
Of course, at the top of the jockeys' championship table, you've got Harry Skelton, who's already well over halfway to 100 winners. What him and Dan are doing is just extraordinary. Obviously they've gone out and bought horses especially for the summer, and that summer squad is as strong as I've ever seen any trainer have. You know, for Beorma to win seven races in 23 days, or something like that... that's just unheard of.Â
It's amazing what they're doing, and the team behind them. And because we're not against them in the sense of targets that they're going for this season, it's actually a pleasure to watch.
Now, if I was in Harry's shoes come October, I'd be thinking 'I need a break', because that's when most lads' seasons are starting. So it's going to be a very long season for them both, but they've got their targets, they're extremely driven, and I've got no doubt that - all being well - they're going to get every target they set.Â
It's up to everyone else to catch up and join them. You know, they just seem to pick off all of these targets every year. So if they achieve everything they want to achieve, I don't think they're going to sit back and hang their boots up next year; they'll be looking to go again, and find something else to beat. Whatever we see from them in the next couple of years is going to be what takes racing forward over the next 10 or 15 years.Â
They're geniuses in what they do. It takes a huge effort as well, and I don't think the pair of them get enough credit, to be honest. You know, these horses aren't machines; you can't just turn them off, then back on again and take them to the track. Dan's been keeping a close eye on everything, and that takes a lot more effort than people give him credit for.
To be honest, the jockeys' championship race is going to be such a tough one to call this year. Sean was around 240 last year, Dan wants to break a record of 243, but Harry's not going to ride all of those winners. So Harry's going to have to go out and about to get outside winners. He has done a little bit of that throughout the summer, but it's something he's going to have to do for the rest of the season. If he does that, and stays fit, then he'll have a great chance of beating Sean.
Sean isn't going to be too worried until we get to Christmas time, where he can sit down and do the proper calculations. Right now, if I had to back one, I'd probably go with Harry. Sean's still not worried at all... or at least that's the impression he's giving. I'm sure deep down it's something he'll be thinking about! But it's good for the sport. You know, Sean and Harry went at it a couple of years ago, and that was great for everyone. It's going to be the same again this year, I'm sure.
