In last week's European outing, ten-man Manchester United were lacklustre in a 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid and Lisandro Martinez's explosive post-match comments generated plenty of headlines and ramped up the pressure on Michael Carrick. He will be hoping for a much better away day this week.
A 1-1 draw away to a very decent Leeds side was not a bad result in that context, but it was another average performance and the Red Devils badly need a win. Too many key players are underperforming, including captain Bruno Fernandes, and the summer window is not looking a great one so far.
Como are 5th in Serie A having lost just once in the league this season. They had a dream home Champions League debut with a 4-1 win over RB Leipzig, but looked open in a 3-2 defeat at Feyenoord last week. They will cause United's midfield and defence problems, but will also give up chances. Carrick's side is loaded with talent in attack, and we think they will turn up here and push Man Utd over the line for a win, even if it's unconvincing again.
As mentioned, we're expecting an open game, with Cesc Fabregas favouring a high-risk style of play and Manchester United seemingly forever vulnerable on the counter-attack. Both teams have scored in four of Man Utd's last five games in all competitions, while the same has happened in seven of Como's nine games this season, including both Champions League matches. Each side has kept only one clean sheet in 2026/27.
Bryan Mbeumo is one of the few Manchester United players to emerge with some credit from the early part of the season, with his opener at Elland Road making it consecutive league games with a goal. He missed one of the few chances they had in Madrid last week, but the Cameroon forward has had at least one shot on target in every competitive game this season, averaging 1.3 per game. We're backing him to continue that streak in Como.
Anastasios 'Tasos' Douvikas played a key role in Como qualifying for Europe for the first time ever, with his 14 goals the second-most in Serie A last year. The Greek striker is his side's top scorer in the league this season with three goals, finding the net in the win at Fiorentina at the weekend, and has scored in each of Como's Champions League games so far. We're tipping 'Tasos' to have at least one shot on target against Man Utd.
