We're really looking forward to Sandown on Saturday. I'm excited to be going there and honoured to be picking that [Trainers' Championship] up. Obviously, it's something I've always wanted to do. I don't know exactly how it's going to feel to be honest, although obviously it's going to be a very special moment for me and the whole team. There are going to be lots of people down there; owners, long-term supporters, friends and family... I think we've got about 60 or 70 people coming down for it. All of the staff are coming down, so we're going to get a big team photo to remember it all.
It's been an amazing year... absolutely incredible. And then, Wednesday was the icing on the cake really, to go and win a race at every track in the UK. That's never been done before, so to have achieved that is an amazing feeling.
This year, we'd planned to hit that £4m mark, which we thought would be enough for the title, although I don't think there was a specific point in the season I'd look back at and say 'that's the moment that changed things', or 'that's where we became champions'... it doesn't work like that. It's been a gradual thing this year. You know, I'm sure if we'd have won it last year on the last day, you'd have felt like one victory was the one that did it, whereas that hasn't been the case this year. So I can't really pick out a moment and say 'that's where it happened', but I can say I've felt like it's been happening all season. That really kicked off with the absolutely unbelievable November we had. We won the Haldon Gold Cup, the Paddy Power, the Betfair, and the Coral Gold Cup all in one month - as well as a load of other races. To do that in one month was pretty incredible.
The team around me is very, very special. it's the owners, the supporters, of course the staff, but the physios, the vets... the everyone. Everyone who has been with us from the start has got us to this point today. Now that I can reflect on it a little more, I realise how much fun it's been, to do it with the people we have. The head staff are just amazing; their leadership is incredible. Most of them have been with us for many years - some from way back when we started 13 years ago. They've just got the same attitude I have; get out there, do our best, run horses and make it as much fun as possible. The atmosphere we've created, collectively, is probably the thing that I'm most proud of. It's something I hope will give us longevity.
Celebration-wise, we're going to plan something in the summer. We'll try and do something with all of the staff, as well. But obviously, at the moment, it's about finishing off the season. If we could get through £5m, that would be another amazing thing, and we will obviously give it our best. It won't make or break our season, but it'll be a cool thing to do, of course.
We start Saturday with Made U Blush and Queen Maeve in the opener - this is a race that's moved from Cheltenham, and it's one I've had in mind all season for Made U Blush. It's a shame she didn't get in the Fred Winter at the Festival, but we've kept her fresh for this, she's in good form, she'll handle the ground and the track will be no issue. Being a fresh horse counts for a lot here. Queen Maeve hasn't looked like she's going to win a race like this, it must be said. However, she gets no weight, and the stamina element of this track will help her. She looks like she wants a little bit further than two miles. She's a good pedigree, a good national hunt, staying pedigree, so hopefully she can run well.
We have Dutch Corner and Kadastral in the Novices' Championship Final, and this is as competitive a race as you'd expect for a hundred grand... but these two are definitely in with a chance. Kadastral probably wants better ground than the soft it was last time- we ran him at Uttoxeter the other day and thought he'd go well, but he got stuck in the ground there. He's definitely a chaser for next year, though. I wouldn't say we've underachieved this year, but we did feel like we'd be slightly further along than we are. But, at the same time, I've kind of always known he'd be a chaser. Having said all this, I feel like there's room in his mark and I think he'll run well.
The same must be said for Dutch Corner, too; I think he's got room in his mark, and he's looked like a horse that would go well in this type of race. We thought everything was suitable for him in this race, until we ran him at Exeter and he hung out to his left, so obviously going right-handed here isn't a question mark as such, but he was more comfortable going left when he won last time. Like I say, though, there's room in his mark, and he does stay well, so the stamina track will be no negative for him.
Doyen Quest and Etalon both run in the Oaksey Chase, and they've both had good years. I've gone on record saying that Etalon has suffered in the handicap because of an unbelievable ride from Harry [Skelton] at Ascot when he won a valuable race. Harry gave him such a good ride that day, and the handicapper rightly had to act, but it was always inevitable that he was going to act to the point where this horse could not win a handicap for some time. It was such a good ride, and it made him look better than he was effectively. We thought we'd try him in this race because the handicapper doesn't necessarily play a part in it, because it's a conditions race, but I feel like he's battling it out for some prize money.
Doyen Quest feels like he wants to come back from three miles, so we're trying this trip for him. He's in good form, and we've not ran him much since the turn of the year, so he's relatively fresh. He's won on good ground before, so we'll go down there and give it our best shot. There's a couple who are rated higher than him in there, but I think he'll put his hat in the ring, and I do think he'll go well. Hopefully they can both pick up prize money in this.
The same must be said for our two runners in the Celebration Chase. Thistle Ask has just had the most unbelievable year - we've taken him from a rating of 115 to 160, and on his most recent start, he finished second in a Grade 1 to Jonbon, on ground that was probably soft enough for him. This ground, and this track, is tailor-made for this horse. We've kept him fresh since that meeting with Jonbon, although it has to be said that it did take him a month to get over that race. He is over it now, though, and hopefully he can go and run another big race. He's had an unbelievable year though.
Mirabad was a revelation last time out - he was dropped in and ran brilliantly on different ground at Aintree. We're going to try and repeat the dose; he's in good form at the moment and he likes the sun on his back. His new riding style definitely suits him, so when they're in the form he’s in, you've got to run them... We think it's worth a go.
Then we have Kabral Du Mathan in the Select Hurdle. Again, this is another horse who has had a brilliant year - he looked like winning the Stayers' Hurdle at every point, basically, until he jumped the last at Cheltenham, and he just didn't quite get up the hill over three miles. This is a reduction in trip though, and I think it really suits him. He's got to carry a Class 1 penalty, but that's because he's won those races, so I'm not afraid of that. I think we'll go chasing next year, so this will probably be his last run over hurdles, and I think it's a suitable one to do just that in. The way he travels and jumps... this nicer ground should definitely be up his street.
We've then got Palamon in a novices' handicap chase - this is cut up a little and there's only five runners, but he's come out of Aintree really well. I'm very happy with that run; I know he finished sixth that day, but he wasn't beaten all that far. And I do feel like two-and-a-half [miles] is probably a bit better for him. The ground is obviously no issue to him, so he should run really well.
Listentoyourheart runs in the last, a handicap hurdle, and she's done very well for us this year. She won a hundred grand race on New Year's Day at Windsor, and then she was third last time out in a listed race, up at Kelso. I don't think she hides anything from the handicapper, but she is consistent, and I've no reason to think she won't go and run another consistent race here, without us thinking we've got enough in hand to win this race. I do think she'll run well.
