Man Utd endured more struggles under Ruben Amorim in the first half of the campaign, but his sacking and the subsequent appointment of Carrick - initially as interim - sparked a resurgence in their season as they ended up finishing third, a huge improvement on the 15th they came in the previous year.

A lack of European football and being knocked out of both cups early on definitely helped with this endeavour, with the reduced schedule allowing them to focus purely on the league - although that should not undermine the huge impact Carrick has had at Old Trafford so far.

Man Utd have built on a promising transfer window last season by adding more quality this summer, with Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos providing a much-needed revamp of their midfield following Casemiro's departure.

The form of Bruno Fernandes, as ever, is pivotal to their success after a record 21 assists last term, while Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha will hope to build on their strong first seasons. Meanwhile, they will hope Benjamin Sesko can begin to find the net more regularly and make himself a Golden Boot contender.

Diogo Dalot, Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez and Luke Shaw make up a settled back four, although young duo Leny Yoro and Patrick Dorgu may break into the defence as the season goes on.

Predicting how every Premier League team will line up in 2026/27

Key Fixtures

Man Utd have three favourable games to start the season against promoted duo Hull and Ipswich and then Everton, before they take on rivals Man City in the Manchester derby in September.

A difficult run in October and November sees them face Chelsea, Aston Villa and Liverpool back-to-back, while they visit champions Arsenal just before Christmas. Another run involving Chelsea, Villa and Liverpool follows in January and February, with the home game against Arsenal towards the end of February and a trip to the Etihad in late March.

United's run-in does not look too taxing, with Tottenham likely to be their most difficult opponent in the final six games.

Manchester United Premier League prediction

United took advantage of their reduced schedule to secure third place last season, but their increased schedule due to Champions League football is likely to come at a cost.

The Red Devils are unlikely to slump down into the bottom half, like they have done in recent seasons, but it could be a more modest season for them this time around. We're tipping United to finish sixth, which would still be enough for European football.
