The Giants are one of the teams that already has fired its head coach and is out in the market looking for Brian Daboll’s full-time replacement. That might be the most coveted head coaching job in the NFL this off-season. For one thing, you are in the media capital of the world, which can either be a positive or negative … or both. Second, ownership has always been largely hands off. Leave the football to the football people. And third, there is a ton of young talent already in place led by first-round rookie QB Jaxson Dart.
So Big Blue may have its proverbial pick of the litter unless a surprise job opens. There was early scuttlebutt about Bill Belichick filling the role as he won two Super Bowls as a defensive coordinator under Bill Parcells with the Giants way back in the day. But Belichick isn’t getting another NFL head coaching job the way his last stint ended, all the silliness around his personal life and the fact he’s doing terribly at North Carolina.
Of course, Belichick won six Super Bowls as a head coach with New England. That franchise basically fell off the map, though after QB Tom Brady left. But new head coach Mike Vrabel, a former Patriots linebacker under Belichick, has worked an amazing turnaround in 2025 and is a favourite for NFL Coach of the Year. Vrabel also has helped turn second-year QB Drake Maye into an MVP candidate. The Pats are going to be good for a long while again most likely.
The most notable Patriots-Giants games are of course New York’s shocking Super Bowl wins over New England in XLII when the Patriots were unbeaten and in XLVI. If we include those two games, the all-time series is tied 7-7. The Giants won the last, 10-7, at home in November 2023 when both franchises were a mess.
New York Giants
The Giants played extremely well on Sunday as a huge underdog in Detroit, but some incredibly baffling decisions late in the fourth quarter by interim head coach Mike Kafka led directly to a 34-27 overtime loss. It was New York’s sixth straight defeat, and it became the first team in the league eliminated from playoff contention. The Giants led the entire game until 28 seconds left in regulation and became the first club in NFL history to lose five road games in a season after leading by at least 10 points in each.
Despite Kafka being the one making the silly decisions, he fired defensive coordinator Shane Bowen on Monday. New York’s five losses in games it led by at least 10 points is a single-season NFL record; the team is 2-5 overall in games it led by double digits at any point. The Giants have lost 12 straight road games overall, extending a franchise record. Good-looking rookie QB Jaxson Dart hasn’t played since Week 10 in the concussion protocol, but it seems likely he will be able to make it back here. Unless the Giants simply don’t want to risk further injury in a lost season, that is. They are 5-2 ATS in their past seven games.
New England Patriots
New England won its league-best ninth game in a row Sunday, but it wasn’t all that pretty in Cincinnati, 26-20. The Patriots were down by 10 in the second quarter and had lost 31 consecutive games when trailing by double digits at any point in a game. The Pats might be showing minor cracks in the armor but they are the second team ever to start 10-2 or better after back-to-back 13-plus loss seasons.
The team got some potentially bad news in front of rising superstar QB Drake Maye, however. Left guard Jared Wilson (ankle) was carted to the locker room in the first quarter, and left tackle Will Campbell (knee) was carted off in the third quarter. Campbell, the No. 4 overall pick in the 2025 draft, is a reported candidate for injured reserve. New England had been able to start the same offensive line in 10 of 11 games entering Week 12. The Patriots are 0-6 ATS in their past six games vs. NFC East foes.
